This work was supported primarily by the Engineering Research Centers program of the National Science Foundation under annual grant EEC-9876363.
Welcome to the VaNTH ERC
Curriculum Project
Goals:

The goals of the VaNTH Curriculum Project are to provide:
  • Information on the state of the art of curricula in bioengineering nationally
  • Examples of bioengineering curricula at the VaNTH institutions
  • Recommendations for the design and creation of new or revised bioengineering curricula
  • Suggestions for meeting ABET criteria and guidelines
  • A description of the integration of core competencies (CCs) with bioengineering content
  • Web resources and links for curricular planners
  • An online forum for discussing bioengineering curricula
  • An online repository for the submission of feedback and materials relevant to the development of bioengineering curricula

Motivation:

The VaNTH ERC has several reasons for developing this site:

  • Two VaNTH institutions (Vanderbilt and Northwestern) have offered undergraduate degrees in biomedical engineering for over 30 years. Another VaNTH institution, UT Austin, is in the process of developing an undergraduate curriculum based upon the principles that we articulate here. All of this experience may assist developing programs, while, at the same time, aid in the revision of existing curricula at established programs.
  • There is still confusion about what a biomedical engineer is and how one should be educated. We address these confusions here, and hope to promote a dialog to determine the content and competencies that comprise the “core” of biomedical engineering.
  • VaNTH is developing educational materials for bioengineering, thereby requiring clear definitions of the “core” content of biomedical engineering.
  • Industry needs to be able to recognize the essential similarities between biomedical engineers, regardless of institution, as well as the specific strengths instilled in their engineers by individual institutions. Industry also needs to be able to differentiate between the training of a BME and the training of graduates in other engineering disciplines. We hope to aid in these efforts.

Past updates are available here

Please note: Researchers involved with the VaNTH Curriculum Project frequently provide new and updated content for this website. In addition, we accept the input and assistance of bioengineering educators and students, as well as professionals in related industrial and biomedical domains.
