Steps to Creating a Curriculum

(Return to Recommendations.)

We believe that there are some general principles that one can follow in creating a curriculum, illustrated in the figure:

· Define the type(s) of biomedical engineer that the program will produce and the career paths the program will prepare them for.  The AIMBE Survey of Bioengineering Employment is available for assistance in understanding general patterns.

· Seek multiple perspectives and involve multiple constituencies in the curricular design process. Consider the following as sources of input on curriculum:

Taxonomy
Faculty expertise,
Students,
Industry needs
Existing programs
ABET guidelines and outcomes

For revision of existing curriculum, consult alumni.

  • Define program goals and objectives

  • Define domain areas to emphasize, based on the mission of the program as well as  expertise of faculty

  • Create courses to cover key concepts

  • Cover taxonomies of emphasized domain areas

  • Consider how core competencies integrate with content
