More Information:
This site is primarily intended for those designing, revising and/or implementing bioengineering curricula. We define “curriculum”
to include the set of topics and courses that comprise an education, and, to some extent, the pedagogical methods employed. At
present, we solely focus on biomedical engineering* curricula at the undergraduate level, though we anticipate extending our
interests to graduate level biomedical engineering curricula as well. We also anticipate expanding into the areas of biochemical
and bioenvironmental engineering.
Within our recommendations we recognize that it is unlikely that there will ever be one set of courses constituting undergraduate
biomedical engineering at all sites. This diversity is valuable and is in the spirit of the
ABET EC 2000 guidelines. Still, there are, and will be, common elements that unify and define the field of biomedical
engineering, making it more recognizable as a distinct discipline. We anticipate that the use of our recommendations will allow
institutions to develop strong bioengineering curricula, while also satisfying local constraints.
*We seamlessly interchange the terms “bioengineering” and “biomedical engineering”. For a detailed discussion of these terms, as
well as “biological engineering”, please see the paper by Dr. Robert Linsenmeier,
“Defining the Undergraduate Biomedical Curriculum”.
