Goals:
The goals of this workshop are to instruct bioengineering, physics and
biology teachers and professors in two main areas. First, teachers will be taught how to
use effectively the Legacy Cycle method of instruction in the Science classroom
for any topic. The Legacy Cycle is a challenge-based learning cycle that
has been extensively researched by the faculty of the Vanderbilt
Peabody College and is supported by the book How People Learn.
Second, teachers will learn how to implement the VaNTH curriculum modules.
These challenge-based curricula investigate topics such as the
electrocardiogram, the biomechanics of the iron cross position in gymnastics,
optics/LASIK, medical imaging, the energy systems of swimming, hemodynamics, and
the biomechanics of balance. Teachers will have an opportunity to complete the
Electrocardiogram, Iron Cross, and Swimming modules much as students would.
They will complete all laboratory exercises. Instructors will help to fill
in any biology, physics, or biomedical engineering content that a teacher needs
in order to implement the VaNTH curriculum modules. It is likely that all
teachers will expand their knowledge of science and technology while making
connections within the sciences.
