Strategic Research Plan
Our overall strategy is
to bring learning scientists, assessment experts, learning technologists and
bioengineering domain experts together into an integrated effort to develop
an educational system centered on challenge-based instruction with major
support from technology. This effort has required a significant re-thinking
of the structure of knowledge in bioengineering and a selection of
principles from learning science that are likely to have significant impact
on bioengineering education. Our strategy has been to organize four highly
interactive research thrusts in learning sciences, assessment and
evaluation, learning technology and bioengineering domains, and education
and industrial/practitioner partners programs.

A diagram of the Strategic Plan is presented above. The systems plane shows the interaction between our main test
beds—the educational bioengineering programs at VU, NU, UTA and HST and the
larger system of bioengineering education.
VaNTH has defined nine major goals to achieve the
Strategic Plan. A chart showing these goals and supporting milestones
over all years of the center can be found here.
