Goals

The goals of this workshop are to instruct high school teachers in two main areas. First, teachers will be taught how to use effectively the Legacy Cycle method of instruction in the Science classroom for any topic. The Legacy Cycle is a challenge-based learning cycle that has been extensively researched by the faculty of the Vanderbilt Peabody College and is supported by the book How People Learn. Second, teachers will learn how to implement the VIBES curriculum modules. These challenge-based curricula investigate topics such as the electrocardiogram, the biomechanics of the iron cross position in gymnastics, optics/LASIK, medical imaging, the energy systems of swimming, hemodynamics, and the biomechanics of balance. They will complete all laboratory exercises. Instructors will help to fill in any biology, physics, or biomedical engineering content that a teacher needs in order to implement the VIBES curriculum modules. It is likely that all teachers will expand their knowledge of science and technology while making connections within the sciences.

The workshop can be made to suit your faculty's needs in terms of total time spent and material covered. We will work with you to plan something suitable and productive!

Why?

The VIBES curriculum modules can replace regular curriculum components and meet numerous state and national science standards. The modules are in their sixth year of field testing and are proving to teach basic science to students better than traditional curriculum.

Cost

A package can be put together for your school. Training in any module of your choosing is $250 per module per teacher. This fee provides training, workshop materials, all classroom materials, and permission to copy the classroom materials by that teacher forever for his or her students. A daily workshop trainer fee will also be assessed in addition to any travel expenses.
