Engineering high school teachers

When?

Physics: July 18-21, 2011
Chemistry: July 25-27, 2011
Anatomy & Physiology: July 25-27, 2011

Where?

Peabody College of Vanderbilt University

Goals

The goals of this workshop are to instruct high school chemistry, physics, anatomy & physiology, and engineering teachers in two main areas. First, teachers will be taught how to use effectively the Legacy Cycle method of instruction in the science classroom for any topic. The Legacy Cycle is a challenge-based learning cycle that has been extensively researched by the faculty of the Vanderbilt Peabody College and is supported by the book How People Learn. Second, teachers will learn how to implement the VIBES curriculum modules. These challenge-based curricula investigate topics such as the electrocardiogram, the biomechanics of the iron cross position in gymnastics, optics/LASIK, medical imaging, the energy systems of swimming, hemodynamics, and the biomechanics of balance. During the week, teachers will have an opportunity to complete the curriculum units much as students would. Teachers will complete all laboratory exercises. Instructors will help to fill in any biology, chemistry, physics, or biomedical engineering content that a teacher needs in order to implement the VIBES curriculum modules. It is likely that all teachers will expand their knowledge of STEM while making connections within the sciences.

This summer, the chemistry teachers will be trained in the Blood Oxygen and Toothpaste units. The physics teachers will focus on Optics and Long Jump Kinematics. The anatomy & physiology teachers will focus on Skin Elasticity and Optics.

Why?

The VIBES modules can replace regular curriculum components and meet numerous state and national science standards. The modules have been proven to teach basic science to students better than traditional curriculum. Embedded engineering standards, such as those found in Tennessee, will be met through these units.

Cost

Full tuition (including housing on campus and food) is $1145 for the physics workshop and $1045 for the anatomy & physiology workshop and the chemistry workshop. Local teachers not requiring housing or dinner meals may attend for $995 (physics) and $895 (anatomy & physiology and chemistry). Discounted equipment packages are available separately. Scholarships may be available.

How to Attend a Workshop ?

Complete the application and submit as soon as possible. Early applications are encouraged, and preferred applications are due by February 15, 2011.
